When Nigeria won the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in 2019 beating South Africa, the prize money for victory in that final was $300,000 the next champion of the WAFCON will take home $500,000 according to the Confederation of African Football.
In a statement, Saturday, President of CAF, Patrice Motsepe announced the new prize money policy which will go into immediate implementation.
Overall, the prize money for winning the WAFCON has been reviewed by 150 percent and the next winner will earn $2.4 million throughout the championship.
The previous winner, Nigeria walked away with $975,000, and the new policy could be extra motivation for the many contenders at this year’s edition of the Championship.
Prize money for runners-up has almost doubled from USD 175 000 to USD 300 000 and the semi-finalists will get USD 225 000 each which has increased from USD 125 000.
