It’s no secret that French Ligue 1 outfit Bordeaux have confirmed they are keen on a move to sign Chelsea forward Olivier Giroud.

If the deal materialises, this might hamper the progress of promising striker Josh Maja who joined the club in the January transfer window.
Giroud is an experienced campaigner and his arrival might mean Maja’s bid for more game time becomes a tall order.
Maja’s decision to leave Sunderland to join Bordeaux was met with a lot of intrigues.

After a goal-laden first half of the season on Wearside, Maja informed Sunderland that he wanted to leave the club.

The Black Cats wanted the 20-year-old to remain at the club but with his contract expiring at the end of the season they decided to cash.
After scoring 16 goals for Sunderland in the 2018/19 campaign, interest in Maja was high.

A whole host of Premier League and Championship clubs were sniffing around while Glasgow giants Celtic and Rangers were both thought to hold an interest.

Maja also shares an agent with Jadon Sancho and Reiss Nelson, both of whom have tasted success in the Bundesliga with Borussia Dortmund and Hoffenheim respectively. So when Bundesliga sides Stuttgart and Wolfsburg were credited with an interest in Maja, it would have been an easy move to understand.

But when it was Ligue 1 outfit, Bordeaux who secured his signature, eyebrows were raised. Was Ligue 1 the right environment for Maja to develop?

Now four months into his stay at Le Nouveau Stade de Bordeaux, Maja has scored just one goal in the Ligue 1 and has found himself in and out of the side.

The player of Nigerian descent signed for Bordeaux on Saturday 26th January 2019.
