Relegation battling Perugia stunned Benevento in their Serie B clash on Monday at the Stadio Ciro Vigorito.

Benevento who are managed by 2006 FIFA World Cup Champions and Ballon d’Or winner Fabio Cannavaro were on a three game unbeaten streak before the Boxing day fixture.

Cannavaro’s men had not particualrly been as solid at the back this season, something no one could have said of their Manager in his playing days.

With an average of at least a goal per game, Benevento were almost certain to ship in goals, conceding 18 in as many games this season prior Preguia’s visit.

On the day, a goal in each half settled the contest, the first coming just before the break through Francesco Lisi (45+1′) before Gregorio Luperini sealed the win in the 83rd minute.

In the course of the game, to salvage something, Cannavaro brought on Simy Nwankwo off the bench.

Simy was introduced with five minutes of regular time left to play, but the Forward could not provide the needed verve off the bench.

So far, the 30 year-old has failed to find the back of the net, his goal drought stretching as far as February and in 18 competitive games.

Albeit he is on loan from Salernitana for the rest of this campaign, the Nigerian has struggled for form and game time – He has made only nine league appearances totaling 316 minutes.

Benevento will return to action in the new year against bottom of the table Consenza in an away game.
