Taiwo Awoniyi was the hero as Nottingham Forest defeated Liverpool 1-0 at City Ground to lift the pressure off Welsh Manager Steve Copper.

It was a spirited display from the newly promoted side and Awoniyi got the all-important goal to hand Forest only the second win this season.

Copper handed Awoniyi his first start in four games against his former side and the Nigerian responded with an instinctively well-taken goal.

The goal came from a dead ball situation in the 55th minute as a lively Awoniyi was fouled by Joe Gomez after he intercepted a wayward pass from the English man down the left flank.

A cross was whipped into the box by Steve Cook and was met by Ryan Yates whose first-time shot came off the crossbar to the path of Awoniyi, and the Forward reacted quickest to convert.

The goal ended a 9-match winless run.for Forest.

It was a special game for Awoniyi who admitted that it was “emotional playing against Liverpool”, the club that first signed him as an 18-year-old.
