Royal Excel Mousrcon of Belgium attacker, Taiwo Awoniyi has been tipped to emerge as the top league’s highest goals scorer should he remain next season, following his run of seven goals in eight matches.
Awoniyi has been on a tremendous roll of goals scoring form, since rejoining Mouscron in January, following a dull spell also on loan from Liverpool of England at another Belgian club, KAA Gent, such that his club’s technical director, Paul Allaerts is looking further ahead for him.
Allaerts admitted he would love to see Awoniyi remain at Mouscron beyond this season, but acknowledged that retaining the former youth international will be a difficult task, with hordes of bids on the table.
He, however, confirmed that Mouscron is set to hold talks with The Reds of Anfield, about extending Awoniyi’s second stay at the Belgian First Division A club.
Sadly for Allaerts, with Awoniyi valued in the range of £10m by Liverpool and Mouscron facing financial difficulties, he knows that a full transfer for the UAE 2013 FIFA U-17 World Cup gold medalist is out of context.
Nonetheless, Allaerts fancies the chances of Mouscron getting a third loan deal for Awoniyi, who signed another contract with Liverpool just before heading to Gent last summer.
Amazingly, though, since his return to Mouscron in January, they are unbeaten in eight matches, with Awoniyi making the league’s team of the week for six successive instalments.
Remarkably, Allaerts is looking beyond Awoniyi’s current marks, as he tips the former youth international, who has received an invitation to Nigeria’s under-23 national team, Olympic Eagles, to emerge, top scorer of the league, next season should he stick with Mouscron.
Allaerts predicted: “But you never know. Liverpool is satisfied, and so is Taiwo. I am convinced that he can be top scorer next season.”
