Montpellier head coach Michel Der Zakarian has defended Akor Adams amid his recent scoring drought.

Adams, 23, made an impressive start after joining Montpellier from Norway’s Lillestrom in the summer, scoring a brace on his Ligue 1 debut.

However, he had struggled to find the net in subsequent games.

Der Zakarian believes that Adams has been unlucky in front of goal and needs better service. He also expressed confidence that the Nigerian attacker will regain his scoring form.

In their last Ligue 1 clash against FC Lorient, Adams scored a brace, ending his scoring drought and validating his coach’s faith in him.

“We knew it would take time to adapt to Akor Adams,” Zakarian was quoted by Allezpaillade.

“Our surprise was to see him score immediately (he arrived) but that’s part of football.

“He must adapt but the others must also want to play with him at times. We rewatched the Rennes match, he made a lot of good calls but he was not served.

“The players who are in possession of the ball must have a different reading of the game, they must see things and must want to give him the ball, especially in the depth.

“You have to find the right synchronization between the servers and the demand but Akor makes the calls.”
