Nigeria’s FIFA World Cup 2026 Qualifying campaign got off to a shaky start as the team were held in Uyo by Lesotho.

Oluwasemilogo Ajayi scored a 67th minute equalizer – his first international goal – in a game where Nigeria’s attack failed to create clear cut chances and were wasteful with the few opportunities.

Lesotho took a shock lead in the 56th minute through Motlomelo Mhkwanazi who headed home from a corner kick, punishing some poor defending by the hosts.

The South African side are currently ranked 153rd in the world, entered the game as underdogs, but almost caused an upset.

It was the fifth meeting between the teams and only the first time Lesotho have picked a point against their more decorated opponent.

Next for Nigeria is the trip away to Zimbabwe at the Huye Stadium, on Sunday 19.
