Super Eagles CB William Troost-Ekong has been declared doubtful by head coach Jose Peseiro for the forthcoming double header against Guinea-Bissau in the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Ekong suffered the injury during Salernitana’s Serie A match against Hellas Verona in the middle of February, and has been sidelined since.
According to a statement from Salernitana, the center back is expected to miss two weeks of action.
With the 29 year-old still recovering; and the Super Eagles squad set to be announced in the coming week, it’s clear the He might not be fully fit to get an invite.
“He is our captain. I know he really wanted to come and play. He told me often,” Peseiro told Sportitalia.
“I am in contact with the trainers and coaches of the Nigerian players. Those of Ekong told me that he is working a lot, although there is not much chance of taking him with us in the next games.
“My friend Paulo Sousa also confirmed this to me.”
