Nigeria international Uche Agbo is peaking at the right time for the 2019 African Cup of Nations (AFCON), reports Footballlive.ng.
The 23-year-old has now added sweet passes to his battling midfield qualities at struggling Rayo Vallacano in the La Liga Santander.
That is an improvement to his style of playing and highlights the maturity garnered in the Spanish top-flight.
Despite not scoring in the 1-0 victory over a poor Real Madrid team, the Nigeria international turned in a commanding performance, marshalling the midfield which earned him plenty of praise.
He was very, very good. He was positive, he was reliable, he was aggressive. He’s proven to Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr he can be trusted, which is vital for him.
Some may consider this an overstatement, the stats against Real Madrid suggest Agbo is worthy of the credit.
The powerful midfielder won 100% of his tackles, both on the ground and aerially, while he had a pass accuracy of 80%.
Rayo travel to the Estadi Ciutat de València next where they will face Copa del Rey finalists Levante, with a home match against Valladolid after that. Sunday’s victory leaves them six points off of safety with three to play, demonstrating the importance of the result to the strugglers.
If Agbo can replicate his performance shown on Sunday, Rayo Vallecano have the chance of beating the drop. It will further enhance his AFCON dream.
He is justifying why he was signed on loan from Standard Liege in the January transfer window.
Agbo missed out on the last World Cup finals in Russia but cannot be overlooked by Rohr if he is fit for the 2019 AFCON in Egypt.
